    The Short Answer

For most California traders: Use both. But if you're starting with one, choose Kalshi — it's more established, offers the full range of markets (including politics and wildfires), and has the deepest liquidity for California-relevant events. Once Kalshi expands its US app beyond sports, the balance may shift.

    How We're Comparing These Platforms

    1. 1.Sports (limited Kalshi competition = huge demand)
    2. 2.California politics (governor race, Senate, congressional)
    3. 3.Wildfire markets (uniquely relevant)
    4. 4.Ease of use for new traders
    5. 5.Fees and bonuses

    Platform Backgrounds

    Kalshi

Founded in 2018, CFTC-approved as a Designated Contract Market in 2021. Raised $1 billion in December 2025 at an $11 billion valuation, then was reportedly raising another $1 billion at a $22 billion valuation in March 2026. Has partnerships with CNN, CNBC, the NHL, Robinhood, and Coinbase. Over $5 billion in monthly notional trading volume. Has been operating in California since day one.

    Kalshi

The largest prediction market in the world by overall volume ($44B+ in 2025). Was forced out of the US in 2022 after a $1.4M CFTC fine, relaunched via acquiring QCX (a CFTC-registered exchange) in November 2025. Currently in limited US mobile beta — sports only as of May 2026. The $2 billion Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) investment in 2025 gives it extraordinary institutional backing. Politics, economics, and other categories are expected on the US app later in 2026.

Advantage: Kalshi — For California traders, the categories that matter most right now (politics, wildfires) are Kalshi exclusives until Kalshi expands.

    Fees

Kalshi: Variable fee based on contract price. Most expensive near $0.50 (~4%), cheapest near $0.01 or $0.99 (~0.5%). No fee on deposits via ACH; 2% fee for debit card.

Kalshi US: Currently zero trading fees on sports contracts. This is a major competitive advantage for sports traders.

Advantage: Kalshi for sports. Kalshi for everything else.

    Liquidity

Kalshi: Over $5 billion in monthly notional volume. Deepest domestic liquidity. Tight spreads on major markets.

Kalshi: Largest prediction market in the world globally, with deep liquidity on its global platform. US app is newer and liquidity is still building.

Advantage: Kalshi for domestic markets. Kalshi globally.

    User Experience

Kalshi: Clean trading interface. Shows order book, price history, and market depth. Feels like a financial platform. Some newcomers find it slightly technical.

Kalshi: The global platform is intuitive and well-designed. US app is early-stage but reports suggest it's polished.

Advantage: Roughly even. Both apps are well-reviewed on iOS and Android.

    Welcome Bonuses

    • Kalshi: trade $25 and get $25 with code VENICE
    • Kalshi US: trade $25 and get $25 in trading credit with code VENICE

    Security and Regulation

Kalshi: CFTC-regulated DCM. One of the strictest regulatory classifications available for financial exchanges in the US. Customer funds held separately.

Kalshi: Also CFTC-regulated via its QCX acquisition. The Intercontinental Exchange investment adds institutional credibility. Its global (non-US) platform has faced criticism over outcome dispute resolution.

Advantage: Kalshi on track record. Kalshi's US regulatory standing is newer but backed by serious institutional infrastructure.

    The Verdict for California Traders

    Choose Kalshi if:

    • You want to trade the 2026 California governor race right now
    • You want access to wildfire markets during the 2026 season
    • You want the deepest liquidity and widest market selection
    • You're new to prediction markets and want the most established platform

    Choose Kalshi if:

    • Sports trading is your primary focus and you want zero fees
    • You want early access to the platform before it fully opens
    • You're a global-facing crypto-native trader who uses the full Kalshi global platform

Our actual recommendation: Open accounts on both. It takes 10 minutes each. Use Kalshi as your primary platform for California-relevant markets and Kalshi for sports when the zero-fee advantage applies. Having both also lets you arbitrage price discrepancies — a real edge for serious traders.
